The most fun things to do in Amsterdam in spring and summer

It’s springtime once again and that means it’s time for the culture and festival season to begin! When the sun starts shining, tons of cool (and free) activities are organized in Amsterdam. Looking for a chill festival or a bit of cultural entertainment? We’ve got the top tips for the most fun things to do in the spring and summer.

Vondelpark open air theater – from May 5th

Great, free theater with seriously talented artists. Along with drinks and nibbles, you can enjoy excellent performances right in the middle of Amsterdam’s Vondelpark. How about Alain Clark on June 24th, for instance? Check out the entire agenda for the upcoming season of the Vondelpark open air theater.

Rolling Kitchens – Westergasfabriek, May 9-13

Every spring, you’ll be sure to find all the foodies in the city right here. The Westergasfabriek is filled to the brim with the most colorful, creative food trucks and converted campers serving unique and delicious dishes. From exquisite tapas to waffles on a stick. It’s one huge, finger-licking-good, outdoor restaurant extravaganza. Find out more on the Rolling Kitchens website.

Open-air movies – from June 6th

Every tuesday at sundown (around 9:30pm), you can watch a movie at the cafe/beach club Pllek in Amsterdam Noord. Laying in a beach chair, looking out over the IJ, you can enjoy cult classic and arthouse films.

Open Garden Days – June 15-17

We already hear you thinking, ‘How many gardens are there really even worth seeing in Amsterdam?’ But, during the open garden days, you get the rare chance to explore the hidden gardens and secret courtyards inside the most beautiful canal houses the city has to offer. Read more about the experience on the Open Garden Days website.

Artis ‘ZOOmeravonden’ summer evening hours – June, July, and August

During the warm, summer months, Natura Artis Magistra opens her doors to the public every Saturday evening, until sundown. During these late hours, you can enjoy the park itself as well as various performances, storytelling events, tours, and, of course best of all, the animals and their nightly rituals.

Edelwise Festival – July 28th

Known for their popular, monthly events in Het Sieraad! Once a year, the Edelwise team also puts on a huge party at Rembrandtpark in Amsterdam-West. Music, DJ’s, and acts set the tone for a super chilled out, summer soiree. Check them out: Edelwise festival.

Amsterdam Pride festival – July 28 – August 4

The most colorful party of the year is without a doubt the boat parade during Amsterdam’s Pride celebrations, on Saturday, August 4th. And, in the weeks before, there are tons of other great events being organized. Read more on the Pride Amsterdam website.

Canal Festival – August 10-19

Amsterdam’s Canal Festival is a celebration of classical music in unique locations. You have the pick of over 200 concerts during these celebrations. And, once per year, the Prinsengracht magically transforms into one of the biggest open-air concert halls you’ve ever seen. Thousands join for the show; either by boat or sitting along the canals. A truly spectacular experience! More information about the different locations and concerts can be found on the Grachtenfestival website.

De Parade -August 17 – September 2

The most fun theater event in Amsterdam! Indulge in amazing food and drinks on the festival grounds in between the many fantastic performances on display. For the more popular shows, be sure to reserve in advance. De Parade theater festival takes place in the Martin Luther King park.

Hartjesdag – August 20th

Every year on the Zeedijk, a massive block party is held where men dress like ladies and ladies like men. Stick on moustaches, pink wigs, glittery shoes…bring it on! A celebration of freedom and happiness. Older neighbors still remember the good old days when a colorful procession of costumed partygoers sang and danced their way across the Zeedijk and Warmoesstraat, making their way towards the Dam. More info on the Stichting Hartjesdagen website.
