Florence: a city with plenty of culture and ambience | The ideal city weekend trip

Florence is the ideal city for a weekend away! The city is small and compact. If you choose a place to stay near the city centre, everything will be within walking distance. As the roads are so narrow, there are no buses but mini-vans to travel around. Buy a ticket at a ‘Tabacchi’ (tobacconist) or kiosk to use this service.

Highlights Florence

Florence is like a large open air museum. You’ll see the most by just wandering around the city. Be amazed by all the beautiful buildings and squares.

1.Palazzo Pitti + Giardino di Boboli

This palace was owned by one of the richest and most influential families in Florence. You can choose to visit either the palace or the garden, or both. The gardens are stunning and vast! You can easily spend a day here. When we were visiting the pavilion, some people were painting there. Very idyllic! There’s also a very impressive stalactite cave (Grotto).

2.Ponte Vecchio

This most famous image of Florence should not be missed: a medieval bridge with lots of shops. All jewellery shops! Even when the shops are closed, it still looks beautiful, because of all the pretty, ancient shutters that are used to lock up the shops.

3. Cathedral

This large cathedral is not the most impressive inside but makes up for it on the outside! The Duomo, or the Cattedrale di Santa Maria del Fiore, is covered with multi-coloured marble: white, green and pink. It almost looks like it has been painted. The marble is so detailed, you won’t know where to look.

4.Piazzale Michelangelo

Here you’ll have a stunning view of the city. The place to be at sunset.

5. Uffizi

Are you an art lover? Do not miss this world-famous museum!
There are many more museums and palaces to visit, like the Palazzo Vecchio and the Galleria dell’Accademia. They are all worth visiting, but you also need some time to enjoy the delicious Italian food!

We stayed at the fun FuordArno B&B during our trip.
